Moving Students from Arithmetic to Algebra
One Step at a Time

In this course we will examine a continuum of student work from the Math Forum's Problems of the Week archive. Selected work will include a range of examples from "not knowing how to start" to "It's perfect. What could I possibly say to her?" We will consider specific ways to move students' thinking along this continuum.

We will experience assisting students in:

• Analyzing a problem quantitatively
• Using mathematical representations
• Recognizing generalization in these representations

This moderated course will be led by Ellen Clay, Mathematics Education Program Leader. It will take place online using Blackboard. The only technical requirements are a web browser and Internet access.

Who: upper elementary and middle school teachers

When: July 12 - July 24, 2008
Registration closes at 5 pm EST on Thursday, July 3, 2008. Course materials will be available beginning July 10. There will be approximately 15 hours of seat-work involved in this course. Participants will be expected to log in at least twice each day--once with an initial posting, and at least once to respond to your classmates postings. Although a participant can get ahead by doing a chunk of the work on the weekends, responses to postings will be expected daily. We envision that many more hours will be spent ruminating over the experiences throughout the duration of the course and long afterwards.

Credit: All individuals who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed 15 hours of professional development. This is equivalent to 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) that can be received from the Drexel University School of Education for a fee of $15 to cover administrative costs.

      $140 - course alone
      $165 - course plus Class Membership access through July 24, 2008
      $205 - course plus Class Membership access through June 30, 2009
        $15 - administrative fee for 1.5 CEUs
