- Thank you for your interest in the Virtual Math Teams Project. The goal of this project is to develop a new service at the Math Forum website that engages learners in the collaborative exploration of math problems. The Math Forum currently offers math problems for individuals to work on. Groups can too, but there's no special program or support for groups. Research on education suggests that problem solving with others can improve understanding of the concepts. In order to design a good group process we need to observe people using the service under various conditions, such as using different versions of the math problem, different combinations of users in groups, different kinds of support from mentors or staff, and different software to guide interactions within collaborative groups.
- The Math Forum will provide a group of SAT-type problems for students to work on. The purpose of the SAT Chat is for students to work together online to compare strategies and figure out which ones are fast, or easy to remember, and particularly helpful. The SAT Chat will take place on a Math Forum web page, and you'll need a java-enabled browser in order to participate.
- The session will run about an hour, and there will be approximately 10 problems to discuss.
- Someone from the Math Forum will be in the chat room to help with any technical questions and to log the conversation. The facilitator will make sure the chat stays focused on math and that participants are sharing different ways to solve the problems.

The following are some suggestions for a great SAT Chat:
- During the session, share ideas about how to solve each of the problems - there is often more than one way to
tackle each one.
- Feel free to ask about anything that seems unclear.
- Make sure everyone in the group understands your method.
- Use this link to test your browser ahead of time for Java readiness.
